 Big turn-out: USA annual meeting & elections!
Despite dreary weather with drizzle all day and through the evening on Wednesday, January 29th, the Union Square Association membership turned out in force to participate in the elections.

In conformance with the by-laws, the annual meeting was run by the Nominating Committee consisting of Chris Everett (Chairman), Diane Asher, Robert Greb, Frank Rodgers, and Barbara Rothenberg.

The 2003 Officers and Board are:

Congratulations to the winners – and deep appreciation to everyone who allowed themselves to be nominated. Of course, a BIG THANK YOU to all those who came out to vote. If you missed it, this was a very good meeting!

*The Recording Secretary position had no nominees, so the position could not be filled at the Annual Meeting elections. It will now fall upon the Union Square Association Board to elect someone to this position. As it becomes available, information about the new Recording Secretary will appear here.

Monthly USA meeting
7 PM, Wed­nes­day, Feb­ru­ary 5, 2003 at 1401 Hol­lins Street. First meet­ing (after the elec­tions) with some new and some return­ing officers and board members!

Guest Speaker: Zach Holl, Pro­gram Direc­tor for Land Strate­gies - Bon Secours of Mary­land Foun­da­tion.

Topic: Vacant Land Manage­ment Strategy. A dis­cus­sion of legal issues sur­round­ing manage­ment of vacant land by com­mu­nity or­gan­i­za­tions, clean­ing and “green­ing” city and pri­vate­ly owned va­cant land, and ac­quir­ing land for side­yards. New lots in Union Square area may be eligible, pro­vided resi­dents par­ti­ci­pate and take re­spon­si­bil­ity for va­cant lots in their blocks. Pur­chase op­tions will also be dis­cussed, and as­sis­tance OROSW (Opera­tion Reach­Out South­West) can offer with that legal process.

Web Site Launched!
Coinciding with the USA Annual Meeting, this web site “Union Square Online” was officially launched on January 29th.
 2-Way Traffic Coming to West Lombard St.
West Lombard will change to 2-way traffic between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Fulton. Work was scheduled to start by the end of January and includes intersection widening, installing a traffic island with curb replacement at Lombard and M.L.K., Jr. and, of course, signal modifications plus re-striping of Lombard.

While signs have been up for several years, it appears to be finally happening. One block of West Lombard, east of M.L.K., Jr., already became 2-way at the end of December, 2002.
 Coming Soon: Union Square Newsletter
A hardcopy (printed paper) newsletter for the Union Square neighborhood is in development. When it becomes available, it is our goal to have an e-version (electronic version) published on this web site.

As popular as the internet may be, a lot of people do not have access to this medium. In addition, there is something comforting about having a paper copy of a newsletter that can be held in the hand or taped to the refrigerator for quick reference.

Continue to watch this space for developments as they become available.
 “Union Square Online” is Officially Launched!
Obviously, as you are viewing this article on this web site, you can see that “Union Square Online” has become a reality. In development since early December, there is still a lot more to do – and much will be added in coming months.

Designed to benefit the whole neighborhood, everyone is encouraged to contribute suggestions, ideas and content. Anyone working on a project or committee, and wanting more exposure via this site, should contact the webmaster to explore how Union Square Online can support the effort.

Possible options include adding pages to this site to present the work of neighborhood activists. In addition, there is a community message board called “The Public Square” where a forum can be created allowing the exchange of ideas related to any group’s activities. To view current forums and other features, please click here.
